January 8th

Who would say it matters
when snow drifts
backwards
in slow motion

Like a mirage
deer graze in fields

Yet on a winter walk
you discover a deer
the victim of a moving vehicle

And you tremble with sorrow
at its headless body
left to spoil
by someone
whose reward
you don’t understand
